Poker Books


Here is a list of some of the most highly-rated poker books on the market today. As far as the quality of books from player/authors, Daniel Negraneau, Phil Hellmuth, TJ Cloutier, Tom McEvoy, and Doyle Brunson's book (with the exception of Super System) tend to be disappointing, while Gus Hansen and Dan Harrington's books are regarded as the best. Phil Gordon's tend to be mediocre. As far as non-player authors, Lou Krieger and David Sklansky's books are always worth the money. Any time you see that a book has strategies that "never appeared in print", it is usually a disappointing book.

Strategy (Hold 'Em)

This is David Sklansky’s first work and was originally published in 1976. Yet, it is still a solid and helpful poker text for players that are new to the game. Some of the topics include: the basic rules, the importance of position, starting hands, key flops, semi-bluffing, the free card, slowplaying, check raising, heads-up on the river, and how to read hands.

This book by Daniel Negraneau is only for pure beginners looking to learn Texas hold'em. There are fifty quick sections focus on key concepts. There isn't anything at all unique in this book though, and it shouldn't be purchased by anyone looking to learn Daniel's advanced techniques.

Daniel Negreanu, along with other talented players (Todd Brunson, David Williams, Erick Lindgren, Evelyn Ng and Paul Wasicka), share details about their personal strategies. You'll learn about: short-handed play, heads-up play, high-limit cash games, how to mix up your play, bluff, win big pots, and more.

This book features mathematical strategies and in-depth analysis of all aspects of Texas Hold'em. This book is targeted to experienced and professional players.

This is Lou Krieger's clearly-written introduction to Texas Hold 'Em. It covers all the important technical aspects of poker as well as wisdom from one of poker most popular authors.

This is Lou Krieger's sequel to his first book. It covers: having patience, position, the flop, common mistakes, loose and aggressive games, tells, and more.

This is Phil Gordon's primer of Texas Hold 'Em. Topics covered are: basic strategy, poker culture, terminology, poker etiquette, a little poker history, statistics and probability, home games and tournaments, low- and high-stakes play, and stories of colorful poker characters.

This is Gary Carson's introductory book on Hold 'Em. This is one of the best books for beginning and intermediate players because it has the best collection of starting hand charts. It also covers all of the other fundamental topics that introductory books cover.

The Illustrated Guide to Texas Hold’em is a heavily illustrated Texas Hold’em poker book for beginning players. Focusing on low-limit play, the author gives basic instruction on how to play the game and strategies that work.

In this book, Phil Hellmuth attempts to spread some of his poker wisdom relating to: analyzing situations, learning successful poker strategy, reading other players, and online poker. This is one of the weaker of the popular poker books on the market though.

This book tries to shed some new light on some of the fundamentals like going on tilt, the importance of position and how to cash in on it, as well as other random topics.

Mike Caro teaches the strategies, concepts and winning plays that make up the foundation of winning poker play.

This is a collection of all of Card Player author Roy Cooke's Play of Hand columns from 1992 to 1999.


This book contains essays Mason Malmuth wrote from 1996 through 2001, which are made to make the reader do a great deal of thinking about poker. Ashley Adams shows players how to play a tight, aggressive game by explainging which starting hands you want to play and how to play them on each of the ensuing streets. He also shows advanced techniques players can use after they learn basic strategy.

This guide shows beginning and low-limit players how to play 7-card stud. This book by Roy West is targeted to low- to middle-limit 7-card stud players and presents 42 lessons for reads to learn. The first half of the book is related to 7-card stud. The second half of the book is split between general poker advice and the advice from Tom McEvoy about Stud tournaments.

Razz

This book is one of the few resources dedicated to Razz poker. The book reveals strategies that are based on probabilities, hand simulations and actual play. Some of the topics covered: a new starting hand point system, how to steal antes, strategy for 4th street and 5th street play, why 6th street is knowing the numbers 7-1, and when to call on 7th street.

Strategy (Cash Games)

In Harrington on Cash Games: Volume I, Dan Harrington teaches the key concepts needed to be successful in cash games, including: starting hands selection, strategy for playing after the flop, the difference between playing against a single opponent versus multiple opponents, and more.

The second in Dan Harrington's series of poker books on cash games deals primarily with the turn and river, which are the two most difficult (and important) areas of play in a no-limit game.

Antonio Esfandiari, a regular at the biggest poker game in the world at the Bellagio, writes this entry in the series of World Poker Tour instructional books, which focuses on Texas Hold'em Cash Games.

Strategy (Shorthanded)

This book teaches you how to dominate short-handed games. You will learn: strategies for 6-handed, 3-handed, and heads-up play, how to play every street, which limits to play, how to handle the mental aspects and cope with the swings, how to use poker software and stats to maximize profits.

Secrets of Short-handed No Limit Hold'em explains the the thought processes of a successful high stakes player, teaches how to read hands, and features many hands from real high stakes shorthanded no limit hold’em cash games.

Authored by 2 very successful online players ("Stoxtrader" and "Zobags"), teaches that a tight and patient strategy doesn't cut it at shorthanded and high stakes games. This book addresses those games by looking at: pre-flop play, blind stealing, re-stealing, isolating a loose player, big blind and small blind defense, and blind versus blind play, and semi-bluffing.

This is another book in the Killer Poker series, which focuses on shorthanded play.

Strategy (Heads-Up)

This book is dedicated no-limit heads-up play. Tournaments (Hold 'Em)

This is the first of poker great Dan Harrington's series of books about No-limit hold 'em tournaments. This book focuses on the early and middle stages of tournaments when most players at the table have plenty of chips, and the blinds are small. Since it deals with pre-flop strategy, it tends to be a little formulaic and conservative.

This is the second volume in Harrington's trio of tournament books. It shows you how to play in the later phases of a tournament, when the field has been cut down, the blinds are growing, and the prize money is within sight. Harrington covers the more nuanced areas of strategy, like how to make moves, handle tricky plays, and heads-up play.
