Line Bets

Line bets may or may not be won or lost on the first roll of the dice. If they are not then the outcome of a line bet is based on the "point".

Pass Line Bet - A bet on the "pass" line is a bet with the craps shooter and is the fundamental bet in craps. A pass line bet is won immediately if the come-out roll (the first roll by a new shooter) is a 7 or 11. The bet loses if the come-out roll is 2, 3 or 12 (this is known as "crapping out"). If the roll is any other value, it establishes a "point" and the shooter rolls again. If that point is rolled again before a seven is rolled, the bet wins. If the shooter has a point established and a seven is rolled before the point is re-rolled then the bet loses (called "seven out").
The Don't Pass Bet - This is the opposite of a pass line bet and is a bet against the craps shooter. A don't pass bet will win if the come-out roll is either a 7 or 11. The bet loses if the come-out roll is either a 2 or 3. A roll if 12 will result in a draw. This is done to ensure that the casino maintains an edge regardless of whether players are betting pass or don't pass. If a point is established and that point is rolled again, the don't pass bet loses. If a point is established and a 7 is rolled before the point is re-rolled, the don't pass bet wins.
The Come Bet - This line bet is similar to the pass line bet but the best is made after a point has been established. You win if the next roll after your bet is a 7 or 11 and lose on a 2, 3, or 12. Any number other than these numbers becomes your point and you win if the number is repeated before a 7 is thrown.
The Don't Come Bet - Again, this bet is similar to the don't pass bet, but need not be made on the come out roll.
Pass Line Odds Bet - If a point is set on the come-out roll (i.e. either a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 is thrown), most casinos allow bettors who have made a pass line bet to take odds by placing anywhere from one to five times (and at some casinos, up to 100 times) the pass line bet. This additional bet wins if the point is rolled again before a 7 is rolled (the point is made) and loses if a 7 is rolled before the point. Some casinos vary the maximum allowed odds bet based on what the point number is. The advantage of an odds bet is that it is paid out at the correct odds.
Don't Pass Odds - If a player has made a don't pass bet, they may also be allowed to "lay odds" by placing additional chips behind the don't pass line. If a 7 is rolled before the point is rolled, the bet wins. If the point is rolled before a 7, then the bet loses. Like the odds bet, the don't pass odds bet pays true odds (1-to-2 if a 4 or 10 is the point, 2-to-3 if a 5 or 9 is the point, 5-to-6 if a 6 or 8 is the point.
Come Bet Odds & Don't Come Odds - Come bet odds and don't come odds are the same as pass line odds and don't pass odds, except that they are made after the player has already made a come bet. The payouts are the same.

One difference is that a situation may arise where a shooter makes their point but there are players who have an active come bet (possibly with odds on it) still waiting for their point to be made. In this situation, the come-out roll will still apply to active come bets but the odds on those come bets are turned off. But the player can tell the dealer that they want their odds working.

Single roll bets

Single-roll bets or proposition bets are resolved in one dice roll by the shooter. Only the stickman can place these bets for players, and they are located at the center of most craps tables. The bets include:

2 or 12 (hi-lo) - This bet wins if the shooter rolls a 2 or 12. The stickman places this bet on the line dividing the 2 and 12 bets.
Any Craps - This bet wins if the shooter rolls a 2, 3 or 12.
Field Bet - This is a bet on the outcome of only the next throw. You win if the shooter rolls 2,3,4,9,10,11 or 12. It pays even money if a 3,4,9,10 or 11 is thrown and it pays 2:1 if a 2 or 12 is thrown. But you lose on 5,6,7, or 8. You have 16 ways to win, but the house has 20 ways to win. Unlike the other proposition bets which are handled by the dealers or stickman, the field bet is placed directly by the player.
Any 7 - This bet wins if the shooter rolls a 7. This bet is also nicknamed "Big Red".

Multi-roll bets

These are bets that may or may not be settled on the first roll. Many multi-roll bets may fall into the situation where a point is made by the shooter before the outcome of the multi-roll bet is decided. These bets are considered "not working" for the new come-out roll until the next point is established, unless the player calls the bet as "working." But casino rules vary when it comes to this situation.

Hard Ways Bet - This bet can be made on either the 4,6,8, or 10. It is a bet that the relevant number will be rolled the hard way before a 7 is rolled and before that number is rolled the easy way. The hard way means that the numbers must be pairs (i.e. a hard 10 is a pair of 5's, a hard 8 is a pair of 4's, etc.).
Place and buy - Players can buy or place any point number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10) by placing their wager in the come area and telling the dealer, "place the 6" or "buy the 8". Both place and buy bets are bets that the number bet on will be rolled before a 7 is rolled. These bets are considered working bets and will continue to be paid out each time a shooter rolls the place or buy point number. Place bets are paid at odds slightly worse than the true odds, while buy bets are paid at true odds, but a 5% commission is charged.
Lay bet - A lay bet is the opposite of a buy/place bet, where a player bets that a 7 will be rolled before the number that is laid. The lay bets pay true odds, but a 5% commission is charged.
Big 6 and Big 8 - With this bet, a player is betting that either a 6 or 8 will be rolled before the shooter throws a 7. These wagers are usually avoided by experienced craps players since they pay even money (1:1) while a player can make separate place bets on both the 6 and the 8 and get paid 7:6. Some casinos do not even offer the Big 6 & 8.
