Longest craps roll

Craps Player Sets Record at Atlantic City Casino

In 2009, Patricia Demauro set a new record for the longest craps roll, at 4 hours and 18 minutes at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City.

Demauro, a grandmother who lives in northern New Jersey, is a novice player, and it was only her second time playing craps. She bought into the game for $100 and quickly garnered a cheering crowd. When she finally lost around 12:31 in the morning, after 154 rolls, she was greeted by the Borgata with a champagne toast. The casino wouldn't say how much she won.

Demauro started off by playing penny slots. A few hours later, by 8 p.m., she was tired of playing slots and went into the poker room to see her friend, who offered to show her how to play craps. Her friend shot first, but quickly "sevened out." Then, Demauro shot and followed her friend's advice when placing bets. According to the casino, she started her roll at 8:13 p.m.

As soon as she hit her point number ("8"), other people started betting. Spectators gathered as players from nearby tables came over to watch, as well as casino employees. Demauro says the game moved so fast because she didn't really even know how to play.

Demauro declined to say how much money she won, but people estimate that her winnings were probably in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Demauro and her friend returned to the same craps table two nights later — but only to watch the game. She did not play, saying the expectations were too high.

What are the odds of rolling a pair of dice 154 times without rolling a seven? About 1 in 1.56 trillion. The odds are smaller than getting struck by lightning or winning the lottery.

The Borgata said she beat the previous record by 1 hour and 12 minutes, set by Stanley Fujitake of Honolulu in Las Vegas in 1989, with 118 rolls. Although there is no official organization that keeps track of gambling records, many casinos keep internal record of significant events. What is the average number of dice rolls before sevening out? 8.
