World Series of Poker Europe

Introduction

The World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) is the first extension of the WSOP tournament brand outside of the United States. The WSOP is the longest-running, highest-earning, and most prestigious poker tournaments in the world. Previously, players had to travel to Las Vegas in order to participate in a WSOP event that awarded a bracelet.

The inaugural WSOPE, held in 2007, consisted of three events held in London from September 6–17, 2007. The £10,000 no-limit hold 'em Main Event was won by Norwegian Annette Obrestad on the day before her 19th birthday, making her the youngest person to ever win a WSOP bracelet (this record cannot be broken in a Las Vegas WSOP event because the minimum age to gamble in Nevada is 21 years old. In the UK the minimum age is 18). Obrestad's win was the largest amount ever won by a female in any sporting event, £1 million – or $2,013,102.

Locations

During the first four years, the event was held in London, England at the Casino at the Empire in Leicester Square. The WSOPE moved from London to Cannes, France in 2011 and was held at the Casino Barrière de Cannes Croisette and the Hotel Majestic Barrière. The buy-ins and payouts changed from being fixed in pounds to euros. The 6th WSOPE in 2012 was also held in the same location France.
