Tim Phan is a Vietnamese professional poker player currently residing in California with lifetime tournament winnings total more than $1.7 million.
Phan was born in Vietnam but raised in California in a large family with nine siblings. His family ran a restaurant, where he worked as a bus boy. Phan started playing poker with his family while he was working at the restaurant to playing cash games at the Bicycle Casino. He later married his junior high school sweetheart and started a family and poker became a means to support his family.
Although he made a good amount of money from high-stakes cash games, he started playing tournaments in 1998. He wasn't successful immediately but made steady progress. In 2004, he made his first cash in the California State when he placed 2nd for nearly $47,880. A month later he notched his first tournament win in the $3,000 No-Limit Hold 'em championship event at the Grand Slam of Poker for $148,200.
In 2005, he placed 24th in the WSOP Main Event, winning more than $304,680. He made his first WPT final table during season 4 when he finished in 8th place. In 2006, he made the final table of the $1,000 No-Limit Hold 'em event at the WSOP, earning $115,894. In 2007, he placed fifth in the WPT No-Limit Hold 'em World Championship and made $464,110.
