Tom McEvoy

Born in 1944 in Michigan, Tom McEvoy is a professional poker player and author. He is best known for winning the 1983 WSOP main event and for the dozen books on poker he has authored or coauthored with other players, such as T. J. Cloutier, Brad Daugherty, Don Vines, and Max Stern. He is also a columnist for CardPlayer Magazine, a poker coach, and a representative of PokerStars.com, where he can be seen playing under his own name. He currently resides in Las Vegas.

He learned to play poker at the age of five from his grandmother. After completing school and becoming an accountant, he realized that he didn't want to work at a desk job his whole life and that he wanted to play poker. So he moved to Las Vegas in 1979 and did well in both cash games and tournaments. His first win was in 1982, at Amarillo Slim's Superbowl of Poker for $57,600.

As of 2009, McEvoy has 4 WPT cashes, 37 WSOP cashes, 4 bracelets, and total live tournament earnings exceeding $2,800,000. His first WSOP cash came in 1982 and his first bracelet came the following year in 1983, in the $1,000 Limit Hold'em event. That same year, he won his 2nd bracelet in the Main Event and became the first winner to earn his entry through a satellite tournament. His heads-up battle with Rod Peate was the longest heads-up battle in WSOP history at the time.

He won his other two bracelets in the Razz tournament in 1986 and a Limit Omaha tournament in 1992. As of 2009, he has only been able to cash once more (in 2006, when he finished in 371st place) since his win in 1983.

In 2009, Tom McEvoy became the winner of the WSOP's 1st Champions Invitational, outlasting 19 other former Main Event champions. He defeated 2002 champion, Robert Varkonyi to win the tournament. His 37 cashes at the WSOP account for $1,293,418 of those winnings.
